Where To Get Your Pet

Become a pet foster parentWhere do you first think of getting a pet when you are looking for one?

There are many choices for where to get your pet. You can get your pet from a pet store, from a breeder, or a friend.

Another great place to get your pet is from an animal shelter or a rescue organization. Many pets in animal shelters are just waiting to find a forever home. People don’t realize that shelters may have more animals than cats and dogs that would make great pets. For example, guinea pigs may be in your animal shelter.

Millions of animals pass through animal shelters in the U.S. every year. The shelters try to find adoptive homes for their pets, but new pets keep coming in before the ones already there are adopted. Shelters often run out of space and then must euthanize millions of perfectly healthy and loving animals every year. The animals did nothing wrong, it’s just that their time ran out before being adopted.

By going to an animal shelter for your pet you will probably be saving the life of an animal. You may not find the pet that is right for you on your first visit to a shelter, but keep trying. Let the staff know what you are looking for and have them contact you when a prospective pet is brought in. Try more than one shelter serving your area.

My Personal Story

Where to get your petWhile this picture may be disturbing, it is very personal to me. I was looking for a pet and I wanted a Shih Tzu. I looked online at animal shelters for a couple months. I found one at a nearby shelter. When I went to visit him, I was shocked at how he looked. They told me he was about 2 years old and had been left alone in an abandoned house for about a month. He was down to about 9 pounds, very skinny, and shy.

I took Korey home and after 5 months you can see how he looked with lots of love, food, exercise, and toys to play with. He filled out, weighs 18 pounds, and now looks like a Shih Tzu. It did take several more months of cuddling and playing with him before he grew to fully trust me because it was obvious that he had been abused in his prior life. Now I have a constant companion who follows me everywhere and who cheated death by being adopted. Maybe your forever friend is waiting for you in an animal shelter or is being fostered by a rescue organization.
