Pick A Pet Cat

Pick a pet catAre you are thinking about becoming a cat parent or adding another cat to your family?

If so you are in good company. Cats are beloved pets, so many families will chose to pick a pet cat. There are 85.8 million cats in 42.9 million or 35% of U.S. households.

Below are stores that are filled with resources to help you learn more about deciding to pick a pet cat. Also there are children’s books to read together and cuddle with a stuffed animal. Adults will find stories for them as well as fun gifts to give to the cat lover in your life, which could be you.

Small kittens are soft and cuddly and within  a year are a full-grown cat. They can live upwards of 15 years. Each cat has a unique personality – some love to be stroked and cuddled, while others are skittish and hide when anyone new enters its home.

For those with limited time, cats do not require as much time spent with them as a dog does. Unlike dogs, cats can remain indoors. You can litter box train a cat fairly easily.

Male cats need to be neutered and female cats need to be spayed when they are brought into our home. By doing this we can keep our cat population under control. According to the U.S. Humane Society 90% of pet cats are spayed or neutered. However, about 3.4 million cats per year pass through the 13,600 shelters in the U.S. and 1.4 million cats are euthanized.

We need to protect our special friends by not feeding them people food that can be poisonous to them. Examples are chocolate, grapes, and onions. Also chewing kittens can find certain indoor plants that can make them ill. And of course other pets in the home can become a meal for your cat – such as fish, gerbils, and birds.

There are many pluses to owning a cat. You don’t have to:

  • worry about pests (mice or bugs), your cat will hunt them down
  • walk them outside in rain or shine, because they can be litter box trained
  • stick to a strict feeding schedule, since you can leave dry food out for a cat

Would you consider adopting a cat?

If you are thinking of adopting a cat, you need to decide if you want a kitten or adult cat. You can adopt a cat from an animal shelter or a rescue group. Animal rescue groups usually don’t have facilities, rather they rely on volunteers to serve as pet foster parents. Often the rescue groups have special adoption days where the foster parents bring the pets that can be adopted.

It’s important to research these groups before visiting. There are about 13,600 independent community animal shelters around the U.S.  Here are some statistics which may convince you that animal shelters could be the place to find your perfect pet.

Each year about 3.4 million cats enter shelters. Of cats which enter shelters, 5% that came in as strays are returned to their owners, 37% are adopted (1.3 million), and 41% are euthanized (1.4 million).

Why not give one of these cats a chance? Visit ‘where to get a pet’ to find an incredible collection of books about the amazing stories of cats who have been rescued and how they impacted the families and communities they joined.

 Are cats the right pet?

As you learn about what it would be like to have a pet cat, consider how you’d answer these questions. If you answer ‘yes’ to these questions, then a cat is probably not the right pet.

  1. Am I allergic to cats? There are some breeds that cause less allergic reactions.
  2. Am I unwilling to deal with a litter box – making sure that is cleaned daily? Cats are very fastidious about their litter box habits.
  3. Would I be upset with behaviors that cats do such as scratching? Getting a sturdy scratching post is necessary. Declawing a cat is not the answer. It involves removing the first knuckle of each toe, is painful for the cat, and is illegal in some parts of the country.
  4. Do I want a companion to go on runs, walks, and rides in the car with me?
  5. Am I unable to commit to a cat’s typical lifespan of 12 years or longer?
  6. Am I in an apartment that doesn’t allow pets?
